Artist's Comments

To All,

It's been almost three years since I have really been active on good old Dev. I decided to start over here, trash my old account (Drakonis) and start posting some of the work I do professionally.
Please keep in mind that this work is Copyrighted and Liscenced (not just the image, but in many cases the design as well); I want to share this work to inspire others as they have inspired me.
Thanks for respecting me and my clients, and I hope you out there recieve some measure of the awe and wonder that you all have provided me!

The Piece:

This is one of the first in a series of several hundred weapon models for the Arenas Project. I will be posting one or two from each style. (Each style has roughly 40 weapons)

Pencil: Style drafts.
Illustrator: Vector draft outline, shown to far left.
Maya 9: Poly model, and texturing.

10 hours from sketch to final.

Thank you!

Alot of people outsorce rendering to programs that are heavy on the presets (like lightwave or renderman) but Maya's built-in MentalRay rendering will do almost all the same things if you know how to layer and mix shaders. Sadly it's not very intuitive, and even though I have been teaching myself modeling in Maya for years it's taken a class or two to get shading up to par.

Ping me if you need help on a project and i'll see what i can do.

Damn... that's a REALLY nice render.

I love the way you've blended the blade and handle sections into a design that's not quite organic, but not completely artificial either.
